Gareth Bale is one of the world’s most admired soccer players right now. His speed, ability to pass defenders and cross into dangerous areas and put him on the map.

Below, I created a sessions that will help develop early crosses and cause defenders issues.

As ever, I would love your feedback on these sessions…good luck!

Crossing Early (Part 1)
Brief Description: Players work in pairs crossing a ball when the goal keeper calls for a cross. Players are encouraged to check away from the ball when receiving the ball to feet. The cross should vary from driven, curve and lofted passes.

Coaching Points:

  1. Address various delivery methods.
  2. Check before crossing the ball.
  3. Sneak a peak, know where GK is standing.

Coaching Theme: Crossing Early (Part 2)
Brief Description: Stations are numbered 1 to 4, on the coaches command the delivery comes from the station. The players attacking the ball (to the side of the goal) will come from the same half as the delivery came from.

Coaching Points:

  1. Attack space and cross before half-way line.
  2. Look to find dangerous areas.
  3. Drive the ball with pace and purpose.

Coaching Theme: Crossing Early (Part 3)
Brief Description: Progressions – The ball is delivered from the half-way line. The ball can also be delivered after one preparation touch. Add defenders in and around the goal area, also station wide players can now defend each other.

Coaching Points:

  1. Deliver early crosses into space for attack.
  2. Variation in delivery.
  3. Control and composure, find someone.

Coaching Theme: Crossing Early (Part 4)
Brief Description: Each team plays 5v5+targets. The three defenders must complete three passes then find a target play before scoring. Two defenders are allowed to join the attack to create 3v3. Goals can only be scored from combination crosses with targets.

Coaching Points:

  1. Deliver early crosses into space for attack.
  2. Look to find dangerous areas.
  3. Timing of runs from attacker.
